Antique Scarab Pin
Ref: K8050A
An antique scarab pin. Featuring a carved blue stone in a scarab motif. The scarab is encased in an attractive, fluted gold border and leads to a polished gold pin with twisted detailing. The underside of the scarab depicts the Egyptian god Anubis and an Egyptian hieroglyph feather, possibly representing the ceremony of the dead.
The Egyptian revival in the 19th Century was fuelled by Napoleon invading Egypt. Many original artefacts were taken from the country, and it became the height of fashion to see these artefacts, or indeed wear them. Egyptian scarabs could be carved from stone, or moulded with an ancient ceramic. Once carved, they would be glazed in the iconic blue-green glaze and fired. This blue-green colour is framed beautifully in this pin with its striking gold border. A one of a kind, antique piece.
Era: 19th Century.
Metal: 18ct Yellow Gold. French Marks.
Fittings: Pin.
Dimensions: Scarab: 15 x 20 mm. Pin: 8cm.
