An antique military sweetheart brooch. Featuring the insignia of the Queens Own Hussars IV division. The brooch is crafted from navy blue enamel, depicting in golden letters "QUEEN'S OWN HUSSARS" with golden laurels at the bottom. In the centre of the brooch is a diamond set 'IV'. Below the brooch is an enamel scroll featuring the motto: "MENTE ET MANU" meaning 'mind and main'. The brooch is topped with an enamel & gem set crown.
The 4th Queen’s Own Hussars was a cavalry regiment in the British Army, first formed in 1685. Arguably, the most famous member of this regiment was Winston Churchill, who was commissioned into the regiment in 1895. This pin is most likely a sweetheart brooch, dating to the First World War. Sweetheart brooches were tokens of affection given by military personnel to their loved ones back home, and would often depict the regimental crest of a soldier, sailor or airman.
