An antique Suffragette brooch. Featuring a central round cut peridot, surrounded by a cluster of seed pearls. The cluster is framed on either side by a round cut pink sapphire, and the brooch is finished with decorative pearl set detailing.

The colours Green, White, and Violet, or occasionally Vermillion as in this brooch, are often seen in antique Suffragette jewellery, and stood for Hope, Purity, and Dignity. More importantly, the first letters of each colour, G W and V, stood for ‘Give Women Votes’.

During the turn of the 20th Century, women and sympathisers of the Women’s Suffrage Movement would wear these colours to signal one another. The colours were worked into many wearable pieces, but the original jewellery has endured the longest.
